Root Cause

Fixing The Cause, Not The Symptom

Build deficiencies are easy to miss, and a fault that keeps returning can start to feel normal. We trace the fault to its cause, fix that and record the fix. These are common examples. Every vessel is different, and none of them is a diagnosis of yours.

Corrosion That Keeps Returning: Stray Current

Anodes that waste quickly, and propellers, shafts or seacocks that pit, can point to stray current: direct current leaking through the water from faulty wiring, a shore supply or a neighbouring boat. Fitting bigger anodes treats the symptom. The cure is to measure the hull potential, isolate circuits one at a time to find the source, repair the fault and check the bonding and galvanic isolation.

A Pump That Is A Nightmare To Bleed

If a pump loses its prime and takes an hour to bleed every time it runs dry, the pump is rarely the real problem. Common causes are an air leak on the suction side, a high point in the pipework that traps air, or a pump mounted where it cannot self-prime. Correct the installation, add a priming or venting point where needed, and the problem stops.

An Engine That Fouls Faster Than It Should

Cleaning or overhauling an engine that fouls early only resets the clock. Common causes include long periods at light load, a propeller that stops the engine reaching its rated load, poor air supply or ventilation, exhaust restriction, and fuel or oil that does not suit the engine. We check what is actually happening against how the engine should run, then change the cause.

How We Find The Cause

  • Every fault is logged against the equipment, so a repeat shows up as a pattern.
  • We ask why until the answer is a cause, not a part.
  • We fix the cause, not just the symptom.
  • We record the fix and check that the fault does not return.
